A Brief Purr-troduction to Maine Coons
Before we dive into Maine Coon colors, let's get to know our model a bit better.
The Maine Coon is a natural breed, one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, native to the state of Maine (hence the name) in New England.
They're known for their friendly disposition, intelligence, and, of course, their impressive size, one of the longest cat breeds. But let's get to the main event: their colors!
A Rainbow of Possibilities
A Maine Coon kitten or adult may come in a wide variety of different colors and patterns, so much so that it sometimes feels like you're looking at a painter's palette! Here's a breakdown:
Solid Colors:
Also called Standard colors by the Cat Fanciers Association. These are the Maine Coons that sport a single color from head to toe, with no other color or pattern muddling their pure hue.
Black:
A classic, these cats are as black as the midnight sky.
White: Snowy and pristine, white cats often have striking eye colors.
Blue:
Don't be confused; a blue Maine Coon is a cool-toned gray.
Red:
Also known as orange cats or ginger. Think of that famous orange cartoon character, but fluffier.
Cream:
A beautiful, soft off-white often with red tips on the hairs.
Patterns
Maine Coon coat may come in many different patterns.
Tabby Patterns:
All tabbies have the classic M on their foreheads, even tabby cats that are not Maine Coons!
Most Maine Coons have tabby markings, whether they are brown, red, silver, blue, etc. Brown tabby is the most common.
Here are the primary tabby patterns:
Classic: The classic tabby pattern has c copper brown with black color markings. There is often some white around the lip and chin. Nose, toe beans and paw pads usually black or brown.
Mackerel: A tabby cat with the mackeral pattern has thin, vertical stripes running down the cat's body, much like a tiger.
Ticked: Each hair strand has multiple colors, giving them a shimmering, unique look.
In addition to the classic brown tabby patterns, you will see red tabby, silver tabby and cream tabby Maine Coons
Tortoiseshell and Calico Patterns
These are primarily female cats because of the way these patterns are inherited. Tortoiseshell Maine Coons mix black with red or blue with cream in a mottled pattern. Calicos, on the other hand, have large patches of solid white with black and orange.

With White
Many Maine Coons sport patches of white fur on their paws, chest, or face. So, you could have a black Maine Coon with charming white paws or a tabby with a dashing white vest!
Eye Color
While not fur, Maine Coon eyes deserve a mention. They can be green, gold, or copper, and in white or bicolor cats, even blue or with odd eyes (where each eye is a different color). Many solid white Maine Coon cats have blue eyes
Colorful Personalities to Match
Maine Coons aren't just about their looks. Their personalities are just as colorful! They're often dubbed the "gentle giants" of the cat world. Friendly, playful, and intelligent, they often act more like dogs than cats. And while their colors might vary, their loving nature is a constant.
So, there you have it! The Maine Coon is not just a pretty face; it's a cavalcade of colors and patterns.
Whether you prefer solid black Maine Coons or torties, there's a Maine Coon out there that'll capture your heart. And remember, no matter the color of their coat, they're all pure gold on the inside!

Kate, I had no idea that MCC came in all those colors! Long ago, friends had a giant cat I assume was a MC, but he was snowy white. He was a very serene fellow, very pleasant. His name was Butch b/c of his size.
Maine Coons are such beautiful cats. I think my boy might have a little Maine Coon in him. The vet said he’s a ‘red smoke’.
